Question:   New Mexico 505-575 Area Code Split Information
Answer:

If you are experiencing issues related to calls involving the NPA 505/575 conversion, please contact Sprint.

The New Mexico state Public Regulation Commission last year approved adding a new area code to meet an increasing demand for telephone numbers. So beginning October 7, 2007, New Mexico will have two area codes – 505 and 575. Go to www.nm575.info for maps marking areas of the state that have been assigned the new area code. You'll also find detailed information on how and when the new area code will be implemented, as well as news releases, frequently asked questions and contact information for the PRC and telecommunications companies involved in the transition to the new area code.

The Public Regulation Commission is responsible for ensuring that New Mexicans have access to reliable and affordable telecommunications services, and the agency is committed to a smooth and successful transition to the new 575 area code. Please feel free to call us at 1-888-4ASK-PRC with additional questions. We look forward to assisting you in any way we can.

Below is a timeline for the Implementation of the new area code.

Oct. 7, 2007 – Permissive Dialing Begins
The new 575 area code becomes active. During this 12-month permissive dialing period, callers can use either the old 505 area code or the new 575 area code when calling locations in New Mexico that have been assigned the new area code. The PRC approved a longer-than-usual permissive dialing period so that residents and businesses have more time to become accustomed to the new area code.

Oct. 5, 2008 – Recorded Announcement/Mandatory Dialing Period
During this period, all calls into areas of the state that have been assigned the new area code must be dialed using 575. Callers who dial the wrong area code will get a recorded message advising him or her to redial using 575.

Jan. 11, 2009 – Full implementation
After this date, telephone companies will be able to assign the same seven-digit telephone numbers in both New Mexico area codes. Therefore, callers who use the wrong area code may be connected to an untended party. If the mis-dialed call is not connected to another line, the caller will hear a generic recorded message advising that "the call could not be completed as dialed."

Question:   Nissan Issues Alert Regarding I-Keys
Answer:

From Reuters Technology News: Nissan warns U.S. cellphones can disable car keys

Customers should note the following:

  • Sprint Nextel customers should be careful if they own a vehicle manufactured by Nissan North America. The car company has issued a warning for its customers: Placing your electronic key too close to your cell phone could leave you stranded.
  • The automaker is asking customers driving two new 2007 models – the Altima or Infiniti G35 sedans – to keep their car keys and cell phones at least an inch apart to avoid disabling the "intelligent keys."
  • Cell phones kept near Nissan's I-Keys -- wireless devices designed to allow drivers to enter and start their cars at the push of a button -- have the potential to alter and/or erase the electronic code inside the keys, rendering them unable to unlock or start the cars. Further, the I-Key cannot be reprogrammed.
  • Nissan has notified current owners of the potential glitch via mail and can get new keys from dealers if they encounter the problem. A new version of the I-Key would be available in the fall.
  • Sprint Nextel is not aware of similar issues occurring with the remote keyless entry systems for any other car manufacturer.
